If Only I Had Room for a Garden…

with one comment

spring in paris

As the sun comes out (hello spring!) I only have one thing on my mind: I want a garden. A place to walk in barefoot. A place to plant seedlings. Grow tomatoes and green beans and cucumbers. A place to start a raspberry vine. Wild strawberries. A space to sit and drink a morning cup of coffee.

But what is an urbanite to do? Spend time in parks I guess. Go on walks. Visit farmers market. Buy fresh herbs. Smell flowers. It gets you close, but not all the way.

I found this quote today, which I love.

“Maybe a person’s time would be as well spent raising food as raising money to buy food.”

-Frank A. Clark

Because just like cooking is one of the most subversive acts you can do (no, really), so is growing your own food. But for now in my small apartment, in which the kitchen requires a delicate dance between clean and dirty dishes and there’s no balcony for a mini urban garden, kitchen herbs and making my own kombucha will have to suffice.

Because if you have sunlight and a window sill or a balcony you should be growing something. Anything. And at least that’s a little step towards a garden, even when you can’t have one.
