New Project: Foodie Underground

with 2 comments

For those of you that have followed along, you know that for the last 2.5 years I have written a column called Foodie Underground. Over time it has morphed into a space where I try to make the idea of good food less elitist. That takes many forms, from interviews with people in the food movement to snarky exposes on sauteed kale.

Well today marks the launch of FoodieUnderground.com, an entire website devoted to the idea of “good food, from good places with good people.” Read the Foodie Underground Manifesto for an idea of where it’s headed.

The Secret Diary of a Foodie, Part Three

leave a comment »

While madly searching for food trucks, a good greens blog and love – we get another look into the secret life of a foodie. (Part 1 and 2 in case you missed them.)

Saturday September 1, 2012, 7:33 p.m.

Dear Diary,

This summer has been hectic! The Barista ended up being a total nightmare (you just can’t date people that bring PBR to dinner parties). Finished the coffee roasting class and then debated on building my own roasting machine in the backyard, but decided instead to focus my efforts on developing a new artisan salt business. Have been bottling up all kinds of infused salts, and everyone loves them so much, I figure I can totally sell them at farmers market. Or at least via my new salt blog. Who eats regular salt these days anyway? Boring.

Appreciating the Fact That Good Food is a Luxury

with 2 comments

“Making food makes you happy?”

I was on a walk with two friends and we had somehow arrived on the subject of food- a frequent occurrence in my everyday life. She was a bit surprised that food in general was on my list of things that made me feel good.

“Well, yeah.”

I thought about it for a second. “It’s a way to de-stress… if I have too much going on I feel good being in the kitchen and making something. It’s like a meditation.”

25 Things You Wish You Had Overheard a Foodie Saying

with 3 comments

“All I had to bring was this jar of homemade pickled carrots.”

“Oh the popcorn? Yeah, it’s the truffle oil that does it.”

“It was Sunday. So I got the pan-fried trout.”

These are all direct quotes that I overhead, or caught myself saying, in the last week. If you spend any time around food lovers, or are simply food obsessed yourself, and you will pick up on some humorous things. Absurd even. If fermentinfuse or are co-op are part of your vocabulary, you know what I am talking about. But don’t you just wish that the foodie world would take it to the next level? Here’s what you wish you had overheard.

The Complete Guide to Traveling Like a Foodie

with 7 comments

“You can’t eat yet.”

My tablemates were ready to dig into their meal when my best friend and travel partner Rachel alerted everyone that they had to wait for a few.

“Just one second,” I said, while whipping my phone out to snap a quick photo.

“She does this a lot, you just have to get over it,” my friend said matter of factly, with a slight eye roll.

It occurred to me then and there that most people don’t take a photo of everything they eat. Let’s not go overboard here: I don’t photo document every single thing that ever crosses a plate in front of me. I do however like to have inspiration for other meals, and when it comes to travel it’s all about keeping a visual diary of all the new foods that were experienced. Again, normal for some, not so normal for others.

What Food Are You Traveling With?

with 2 comments

Five minutes before I needed to be out the door I was running around like a madwoman. Leaving is always like this, even if it’s just for a short trip. Trash taken out? Check. Wallet? Check. Computer? Check. Computer charger? Check. Anything else? Shit. The hazelnuts and raspberries. Grab bulk bag of hazelnuts from freezer, not taking time to measure out how many I actually needed, and pulling the glass jar of raspberries from the fridge and stuffing it in right next to my computer case.

Completely normal.

Even if you’re not on an academic schedule, the longer days of the season mean that you have way more time on your hands than usual. Which indicates that it’s high time to stop drooling over blogs about backyard homesteading and actually do something. Are You Part of a Food Trend or Part of a Movement?

with 6 comments

This is the latest installment of my Foodie Underground column.

“I just had a Portland moment and only you will appreciate,” my friend said, calling from Tuscon in the middle of a Sunday.

“Ok, what?”

“Well, so we walked into this cute coffee shop and the first thing I thought to myself ‘I wonder where they roast their beans?'” she paused. “Who am I?”

At first thought I saw nothing wrong with this situation. Good coffee shops tend to sell good coffee, and if they’re really good, they’re probably running a coffee roasting operation in the back. Nothing weird there.

But at second thought, I realized what she meant. Most people, even those in coffee-centric cities, are probably more concerned with what coffee drink they’re going to buy than where the beans were roasted. We’re in the minority.

The Secret Diary of a Foodie, Part Deux

leave a comment »

This is the latest installment of Foodie Underground.

Whatever happened to the foodie that was in search of love and a good greens blog? We snagged her journal for a follow-up.

Wednesday April 4, 2012, 7:33 p.m.

Dear Diary,

Since I ditched the Greens Blog idea, I have been trying to focus on my coffee project. I have been taking a coffee roasting course (a cheese making course seemed so last year) and I think I have found my calling. And there’s a really cute coffee roaster leading the class… unfortunately his jeans are skinnier than mine. After class last night he asked me if I wanted to come up with a special sea salt, coffee cake recipe for the coffee shop he works at. Yes, please! In exchange he’s going to hook me up with free craft-roasted Americanos for a year. I just couldn’t say no.

Why Are We Obsessed With Food Porn?

leave a comment »

When four different people, who don’t know each other, all send you the link to the same article, an article that poses the question “are your friends bombarding you with food porn?” you know you have a problem.

Been inundated with food photography lately? You are not alone.

As I sat down to the first impromptu backyard dinner of the season last night, the hostess stopped everyone from putting any food on their plates so that we could get a picture of the table first. I had my phone out (of course), because that tablecloth color went so well with the salad. Click. And that grilled asparagus… so green. Click. But for the sake of maintaining my sanity and living in the moment, I did not Instagram. You have to draw the line somewhere.
