25 Things You Wish You Had Overheard a Foodie Saying
“All I had to bring was this jar of homemade pickled carrots.”
“Oh the popcorn? Yeah, it’s the truffle oil that does it.”
“It was Sunday. So I got the pan-fried trout.”
These are all direct quotes that I overhead, or caught myself saying, in the last week. If you spend any time around food lovers, or are simply food obsessed yourself, and you will pick up on some humorous things. Absurd even. If ferment, infuse or are co-op are part of your vocabulary, you know what I am talking about. But don’t you just wish that the foodie world would take it to the next level? Here’s what you wish you had overheard.
The Ultimate Food Guide To Summer: 100 Things to Do With Your Vacation
Even if you’re not on an academic schedule, the longer days of the season mean that you have way more time on your hands than usual. Which indicates that it’s high time to stop drooling over blogs about backyard homesteading and actually do something. Welcome to the official Foodie Underground Guide to Summer, with a list of everything you ever wanted to do when it comes to food, and a few things you never thought of.
Quick Fixes to Pretending You’re a Foodie
The scene is starting to feel familiar. You’re eating a dessert out of a mason jar and you have spent the last 15 minutes listening to a conversation about the merits of mezcal in cocktails. “I just really can’t stand the taste. Put a drink in front of me and I can definitely tell you if it has it in it or not,” you overhear, and you internally swear for not having a good comeback.
A comeback that was just a little more…in-the-know.
Why We Have to Normalize Food Consciousness
I was pulling out ingredients for dinner from the refrigerator and my friend was visibly squirming looking at the quart glass bottle of green sludge that was on the first shelf.
“It’s just a kale smoothie.”
She looked at me and rolled her eyes.
“I know, I know… who has kale smoothies in their refrigerator?” I responded. I paused for dramatic effect in order to underline the absurdity of my next statement. “It has chia seeds in it too.”
When Food Equals Love
There’s internet dating for foodies now. Clearly.
Ultimately, food can be sexy, but dating the foodie crowd? You can only take so many discussions about the merits of sparkling water and urban wineries. As Felicity Cloake of The Guardian put it, “does a foodie really need another foodie to be happy?”
I am not so sure.
George Bernard Shaw once said, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” If there are two of you with a love for food, there may not be so much room for the actual love part. And by that same token, if you’re in the business of dating, and you’re schmoozing foodies, you better know what you’re getting yourself into.

Foodie Humor
Stuck in the midst of a winter cold, and so when I came across the new series called Foodies, I was highly entertained. Nothing beats tongue-in-cheek humor in my book.
Mockumenting “a group of L.A. culinary enthusiasts whose passion for food spills off the table and into their personal lives,” the series is all devoted to poking fun at the smugness that so many love to point out comes along with loving good food. That assumed pretension some people think is inherent in the foodie movement may or may not be a valid argument, but in poking fun at it, Foodies is actually giving the movement more street cred.
I mean, come on… “She’s still into me, cheese puffs prove it.” Genius. Watch the trailer here.
