When it Comes to Food, Are We Superficial?
I’ve been thinking a lot about food and food marketing lately, and feeling a bit frustrated that we’re quick to hop on board and buy trendy foods instead of just eating what’s good for us. It’s the topic of this week’s Foodie Underground column.
“We like to accuse the industrial food world of using food marketing to keep people eating unhealthy, citing examples of sugar cereal that’s branded as part of a complete breakfast. But let’s not kid ourselves, the healthy food world does it too.
Take the example of superfoods. First of all, there is no exact definition of the word “superfood.” You can slap that name on any food that is power-packed with nutrients. Second of all, do you know where your superfoods are coming from? Sure, goji berries might be good for your health, but the majority of them are grown on industrial fields in China. We say we want to be locavores and then we go dousing our salads in berries and grains that are imported from across the world.”

IKEA Takes Over Paris Metro
Ah the combination of my two foreign loves, Sweden and France… Here’s a fun Friday post:
Forget a boring commute. In Paris, between now and March 24, the metro is being turned into a comfortable living room. That’s thanks to a marketing initiative by IKEA, which is turning 4 metro stations into furnished interiors.
A crazy marketing campaign? Maybe, but it is ingenious in that it gets people passing by to interact with the product. And ask any metro goer and I’m sure they’ll take a comfortable couch over a gum-covered steel bench.
More pics after the jump.
New Beginnings
As a traveler, I know the benefits of pushing myself. As a writer, I know the benefits of getting out of my comfort zone. And as a human being, I know that sometimes there are moments when we have to do both of those things, and take a giant leap. I took that leap last week with the official launch of my new business endeavor, co-founded with my lovely friend Emily, Under Solen Media. Sticking true to those Scandivanian roots, we named our company “under the sun” in Swedish. It only seemed right.
So what are we planning on doing? Something along the lines of providing dynamic, cutting-edge social media strategies to align outdoor brands, non-profits and adventurers. In other words, meeting and working with a lot of cool people! Matador did a great interview with us last week about what we’re doing, and we’re very grateful to them for the exposure.
And in other news I’m now writing for the excellent greenie site, EcoSalon. You can read my first post here.
So all in all, after a giant leap, I’m very excited for all the new endeavors!
