Happy Chinese New Year, From Paris
Paris is a postcard city.
Even if you have never been to Paris, you have a vision of what the streets and people look like. From books and movies, you have garnered what the ambience in a bistro must feel like. From paintings you know that there are cobblestones. From history class you probably know a thing or two about the Bastille and maybe even the Eiffel Tower.
There are so many people that never come to Paris, and yet they have a view of it etched into their minds.
But while Paris is beautiful, romantic and all those other things you always want it to be, it’s also much more than that. In fact, it is so often completely different than the postcard view.
Je Suis Charlie: Thoughts and Photos from Paris
“Silence is never the answer, and when we ask ourselves what we can do tomorrow and the next day and the next day, it’s to continue to speak out. It’s to continue to do what we do, live our lives without fear, but also do our best so that those around us don’t have to live in fear either. We do not meet hate with hate, we meet it with compassion. We work hard to build tolerance. We create that space where all people feel safe and can congregate. Where they feel welcome and at home.”
I wrote that in an essay for Sprudge on the recent days in Paris. I am finding that all I can do in the midst of this tragedy is write. And if this week has taught us anything it’s that we must fight with our pens.
Friday Photo: New York Fashion Week
Models, mirrors and cameras galore at the Edun show in New York City last week.
If You Love Polaroids…
Food Photo Obsessed
“Have you taken photos of anything besides food this summer?”
I think we all know the answer to that question… which is why a little post all about food porn seemed appropriate.
Foodie Photo Addiction
This week over on the Foodie Underground column I had the delight of writing about one of my favorite subjects: food porn. Sure, that may sound a little harsh, but if you’re addicted to beautiful pictures of good food, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You find yourself with a camera often closer to your plate than your fork, you know exactly what shutter speed to use in a dimly lit restaurant and shopping at farmers market takes twice as long as the average person because you’re forced to do a round to zoom in on all the fresh carrots and bell peppers.
Earth From Above
One of my favorite photographers, Yann Arthus Bertrand, is bringing his work to the US in 2009. Bertrand’s aim is to inspire people to think globally about sustainable living and he does so by taking his art to the sky. Shooting from airplanes, Bertrand manages to capture impressive shots that visually teach us about environments around the globe.
His new exhibit, Earth From Above, will feature 150 4-ft. by 6-ft. prints, on display in New York City from May 1 2009 to June 28, 2009. The exhibit will then take off for the other coast and be displayed in California. Another excellent example of artwork meant to change our perspectives on how we live and interact with the world around us.

Joining flickr…. finally
Who knew that having a digital camera could be so much fun? I feel like I’ve reached a new level of creativity… and in doing so I’ve decided to do as so many other of my fellow traveling/writing/vagabonding friends do and start a Flickr account, meaning that I have officially joined the masses. It’s always interesting to contemplate how much technology has come to play a role in my everyday life. Things that would have remained in my journals and photo albums five years ago are now pasted all over the internet, free for perusing. And although this still makes me feel a little uncomfortable, I appreciate that free access to creativity that the internet allows for.
Most of the photos are currently from farmers market, but give me a few weeks and I’m sure there will be whole lot more.
