Words for Winter Solstice
A reminder to acknowledge the dark, and celebrate the light. Bring kindness into these dark days.
Kindness with no expectations, kindness given to someone else simply for wanting to put good into the world. Kindness to bring warmth to the coldest and darkest of moments. Kindness to keep us open, accepting. Because when we give kindness to others, we feel it in return.
One kind word to the postmaster who is dealing with the line of ten people, all trying to ship unruly boxes.
One kind word to the cashier working overtime.
One kind word to a friend who needs it.
One kind word to a stranger, because it could be the only one they receive today.
One kind word to a family member.
One kind word to yourself.

Use Your Heart: Create Love, Spread Love
“The mind creates the abyss, the heart crosses it.”
-Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
It’s funny how when you need certain words, they come to you. My mother sent me this today – she’s good like that, having that motherly intuition to send me inspirational words when she knows that I need them. Sometimes they are her own, sometimes they are someone else’s.
And these struck a chord; a good reminder for a world where our brains are constantly spinning. Things may be overwhelming, but often all we need to do is to treat ourselves and those around us with kindness. Give love, receive love.
So with that, go spread some positivity this weekend.
Happy Valentine’s Day. Give Love.
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”
-Dalai Lama
Give love. Receive love. Share love. That is what we should do today and everyday.
(I also made heart-shaped scones in celebration – they’re gluten-free, vegan and super simple – just to bring a little more cheer into a gray and dreary February day. Enjoy!)
Recipe: Coconut Blackberry Clafouti à la Julia Child
“Dining with one’s friends and beloved family is certainly one of life’s primal and most innocent delights, one that is both soul-satisfying and eternal.” – Julia Child
For today, Julia Child’s 100th birthday, it seemed only fitting that I add one of her classic recipes to my repertoire in celebration. She was well known for her calfouti, which is pretty much a fancier version of a Dutch Baby pancake, and with a pint of freshly picked blackberries, I couldn’t resist making a revamped gluten free version made with coconut flour and milk.
Friday Photo: Taking Time for Stillness
Inspired by this quote for the weekend:
“In order to get from what was to what will be, you must go through what is.” – Anonymous
Which means taking time for stillness and simple pleasures.
Friday Photo: Grace
Beauty without grace is the hook without the bait. –Ralph Waldo Emerson
Friday Photo: Ebb and Flow
Stormy water hits a calm beach.
Nature is about balance; the coming and going, the ebb and flow.
This got me thinking about the ebb and flow of opportunities for risk that come and go every single day.
Every. Single. Day.
We are inundated with opportunities. The question is what we do with them.
It’s this simple: If I never try anything, I never learn anything. If I never take a risk, I stay where I am. If I go ahead and do it, that affects how much I continue wanting to do it. When I hold myself back, I trade appearances for the opportunity to find out what I am like. – Hugh Prather
Life is Too Short
Good words from director and author of Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi:
Life is too short and we cannot spoil it. I don’t have 300 years in front of me. So I just do the things that I really want to do at the moment because that’s the only way you will do them well. If you don’t believe in yourself, it won’t work.
