“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”

-Dalai Lama

Give love. Receive love. Share love. That is what we should do today and everyday.

(I also made heart-shaped scones in celebration – they’re gluten-free, vegan and super simple – just to bring a little more cheer into a gray and dreary February day. Enjoy!)

Recipe: Gluten-Free Apple and Date Buckwheat Scones

with one comment

buckwheat scones

I have been in the midst of wrapping up a cookbook with my friend Johanna (more on that here) so there have been a lot of butter and flour combinations in my kitchen as of late.

While that is all well and good (just like Julia Child, I do happen to believe in butter, as long as it’s real butter), sometimes I just crave making something that has nothing to do with standard baking ingredients. A little olive oil here, a little gluten-free flour there.

There is beauty and creativity born out of restriction, after all.

This recipe has become my Sunday standard, and you wouldn’t even guess that it’s gluten and dairy free. The secret? Ground almonds.

Sunday Inspiration

Curled up on the couch with coffee, scones, and the New York Times. Hours spent perusing this season’s Times Style Magazine, looking for design inspiration and getting caught up in stylized photo shoots. Blissful Sunday.

Sunday Morning Scones

with 2 comments

There’s a beauty in the simplicity of Sunday mornings. Coffee, newspaper and NPR in the background. These scones are a perfect addition. The recipe is adapted from Sheila Lutkins’ Dorset Scones in All Around the World.

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled + cut into cubes
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup dried currants
  • 1/2 sliced, toasted almonds

1. Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and nutmeg. Add cold butter and mix together until it resembles coarse meal. [Easiest way to do this is in a food processor, but using your hands to do the job works just fine!]

2. Whisk egg in small bowl and mix together with milk. Add to flour mixture and mix until dough forms large curds.

3. Knead in currants and almonds.

4. Make two round balls and flatten on greased pan. Cut each round into eighths.

5. Preheat over to 450F, bake for 15 min.

Bon appetit!
