Recipe: Summer Carrot and Date Quinoa Salad with Basil and Mustard Citrus Vinaigrette

with 7 comments

The arrival of summer means the arrival of bags of mixed salad greens at farmers market, or of course, your own from your garden. Instead of basing salad recipes off of them though, I like to throw them in as an extra addition to whatever I am making, a complement to the rest of the dish. That’s exactly what they are in this quinoa salad recipe.

Honey, Ginger Sparkling Lemonade with Rosemary

with 27 comments

My friend Beda and I have an ongoing long distance food affair. Settled in a small town in Colorado, we send each other recipes on a regular basis, recommending new food books and asking for tips on what we should bring as a side to the dinner party we got invited to. So it’s only fitting that when I went to visit we had to make a recipe that complemented the late spring Colorado sun.

Portland Love

with 5 comments

It’s fall, and despite the warm air you can tell the rain will eventually get here. But for now the bike ride home is beautiful; quiet, still, almost balmy. The waterfront is practically abandoned as people have committed their evenings to activities that align with the season. With no one out except the few well trained runners, you can ride as fast or slow as you want with no interruptions. Lights reflect on the water and the warm air haze makes for a colorful sunset. It’s moment like this to love where you live.

The nights are warm and farmers market is still in full force. And sangria never tasted better.

Excellent combination.

Weekend Refresh: 23 Feet, Outdoor Slumber Parties and Home

with 3 comments

Sometimes you need to hit the refresh button. And so you plan a city escape.

A personal screening of 23 Feet is certainly something to be thankful for, and somehow I conned the Red Reel ladies into bringing the Airstream out to my parents’s house out in the wild hinterlands of Western Washington. That’s what I call love.

Pop up a screen, turn on the Christmas lights and lay out some blankets on the hill and you’ve got yourself an outdoor theatre.
