Paddling for Change: River of Action

350 cake

Things are gearing up big time for’s October 24th International Day of Climate Action. If you’ve been living in a cave and have somehow missed what is, it’s pretty simple.

From River of Action:

In 2007, NASA’s chief climatologist, Jim Hansen, released a study marking 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as the safe upper limit for humanity. Much more than that, and we risk dangerous temperature increases. Unfortunately, we’re at 390ppm and rising 2 ppm each year. Writer and activist Bill McKibben launched in response. The goal is to organize a grassroots campaign designed to educate the world about the runaway CO2 levels, and then motivate people to do something about it. Thousands of communities around the world will represent the number 350 as prominently as possible to send a message to world leaders bound for the UN Climate Change Conference this December in Copenhagen.

With actions planned for all over the world, it’s hard not to take part. Last night in Portland, River Action, along with help from Keen, Nau, Wend Magazine and Hopworks, hosted an October 24th pre-party. Basically an event to get people revved up on the need for climate change action and reminding us all not only to take part on the 24th, but in our everyday lives. [That and drink free beer BYOC style — Bring Your Own Cup]. On the 24th River of Action will be harnessing the power of paddlesports communities all around the world and having them form “350” on waterways. A creative idea that’s certainly getting some attention… can’t wait to get out on the river and take part!

Great event with an uber fabulous 350 cake. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Find out what action is taking place near you here.

I’m Podcasting!

leave a comment »

wend_dsp_logoIt’s been a busy last few days. Thanksgiving was fortunately full of a lot of sitting around and drinking wine, but then there was the inevitable return to an inbox full of emails and a to do list too long to even begin thinking about. But in the hectic days of last week, I forgot to post about launching podcasts over at Wend!

Now you can listen to feature stories from Wend writers as well as interviews with global adventurers, all conducted by yours truly. It’s an exciting project and I’m stoked to do more. Check out our first two that we posted last week. The first is Across the Andes, the first section of a two part story about Gregg Treinish and Deia Schlosberg, who trekked the entire length of the Andes and were just named National Geographic Adventurers of the Year! You can listen to them reading their moving story, which is just as inspiring as when you read it yourself!

The second podcast is a personal favorite: an interview with French writer and traveler Alexandre Poussin. Poussin and his wife trekked from the Cape of Good Hope to the Sea of Galilee in an incredibly epic journey, which has been recently documented in the book Africa Trek and currently running as a PBS series. It was an honor to chat with him (and fun as well). You can check out the podcasts — and others coming soon — at Wend’s Digital Story Project.

Fall issue of Wend is out!

leave a comment »

After a summer of hard work, the fall issue of Wend is finally out! The funny thing about working on a magazine is that you spend so much time researching and writing articles, then editing them, then proofing the pages before they go to the printer, that by the time the issue arrives in the office, it feels like old news. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t love this issue!

There’s an amazing story by Gregg Treinish and Deia Schlosberg, the first two people to hike the entire length of the Andes, as well as plenty of other stuff to inspire you to get out and do something! You can preview some of the articles here.

More cool photo action from Wend

leave a comment »

Friday Photo was such a good idea that we decided to use it over at Wend. Today’s is a shot from the Inca Trail taken by fellow travel writer and photographer Lola Akinmade. If you want to get on the Wend Friday Photo mailing list — meaning you get a sweet weekly shot in your inbox — send a shout out to fphoto[at]

As of today Wend has a flickr account as well, and there’s even a Wend pool, which you can add photos to in the hopes that they get featured on the Wend blog. Check it all out here.
